There are many factors that affect a person’s success in sports betting (and all financial markets) but I’d have to place this one shift of thinking at the top of the tree:

Winning is a long-term process

It is a direction, a trend, a habit you develop, maintain and build upon. It is not just the outcome of a singular event, just as a team that scores a goal does not win the match if they also concede 7 during the game.

We must measure our success over a longer term and, whether we have established an end point in 6 months or 50 years, we will benefit from working to infinity. What do I mean by this?

The best action in the short-term is the one that produces the best result in the long-term.

Every bet, investment or trade, whether it be on a football match, company stock or commodities such as coffee, oil or gold is an exercise in assessing the risk to reward ratio. Individual outcomes should be of low consequence, consistently make the “best” decision and you will make money – lots of it.

Warren Buffett, one of the richest men of recent history and investor extraordinaire, when discussing how long he prefers to own a stock for, famously said “Our favourite holding period is forever”. (This doesn’t mean that he will keep all purchases and never sell, rather shows his decision-making criteria on the quality of an investment).

So, in sports betting, consider what action is going to help you best achieve your goal (to make long-term consistent profits).

It’s like the saying, “You may have won the battle, but I will win the war” – most casual gamblers think in terms of winning each individual battle and, despite the fact that they never win them all, are seldom even aware of how they are performing in the war of infinite battles.

So, think like a long-term winner: in any situation consider not what the most likely outcome is but what position you should take to continue on the path towards your goal.
